Careers in Academic Medicine
| Doctors who want to pursue a career in research, or combine clinical practice with research, need to gain both the necessary clinical and academic qualifications in the course of their training. The UK Clinical Research Collaboration and Modernising Medical Careers have recently established dedicated training pathways for clinical academics. The Academy welcomes this, as an important contribution to building a workforce to establish the UK as a leader in health research. The new Foundation Year and Specialty Training programmes provide many opportunities and flexibility. To help navigate the different options available, please see the following pages, links and downloads for advice. |
| Medicine provides opportunities for carrying out many different types of research, such as:
Clinical research – involving patients, to elucidate the symptoms or course of a particular disease or to provide an evidence base for a new drug or therapy in a clinical trial,
Laboratory-based research – increasing knowledge about disease processes and providing leads to new ways of treating them,
Epidemiology – understanding public health issues and the status and causes of diseases in populations (e.g. smoking and lung cancer),
Health Services Research – looking at the way care is provided for patients, which may involve qualitative as well as quantitative methods.

A guide to programs starting on or after 1st August 2007 for medical and dental graduates To aid trainees, supervisors and assessors in reviewing academic progress during specialty training, guidelines have been developed. The guidelines set out a simple, flexible framework for monitoring academic training and achievement. We commend this approach for Academic Clincial Fellowships, all Clinical Lecturers and trainees who are 'Out of Programme' in research or working for a higher a degree.
