Postgraduate research training for doctors

Two young doctors

Clinical training for doctors has been through a period of considerable change in the UK and the Academy has been working to make sure that the opportunities for academic training – and the flexibility that it often requires – have been included in the new career pathways.

After the MB degree, postgraduate research training for doctors has always required flexibility, to accomodate variations in different specialties and different individual interests. Achieving both the clinical and research qualifications for a successful career in academic medicine can be helped by actively seeking advice from postgraduate deaneries and academic supervisors and mentors.

Clearer opportunities for academic study have now been mapped out, around Foundation Years 1 and 2 and Specialist Clinical Training.

To aid trainees, supervisors and assessors in reviewing academic progress during specialty training, guidelines have been developed. The guidelines set out a simple, flexible framework for monitoring academic training and achievement. We commend this approach for Academic Clincial Fellowships, all Clinical Lecturers and trainees who are 'Out of Programme' in research or working for a higher a degree.
