The National Clinician Scientist Award Scheme was launched in 2001. To date, six application rounds have appointed 96 Clinician Scientists across the UK who have been awarded an NTN(A) - seebelow. Since relatively few are awarded each year, they are very competitive awards.
National Coordinating Centre for Research Capacity Development oversee the Clinician Scientist awards made by the Department of Health and details of the Clinician Scientist Awards – what they offer, what you need to be eligible and how to apply – are at their website below:

The NCCRCD website also has a list of all 13 funders which currently make Clinician Scientist Awards.
When new Clinician Scientists are appointed by sponsoring organisations, to a scheme which is judged eligible by the Lead Postgraduate Dean for Academic Medicine, their National Training Number (NTN) will be given the suffix (A) and this standard training place will be released to the host post-graduate dean, to be re-allocated for specialist training.
