Funding for Biomedical Research

Grants worth over £1 billion are available every year in the UK to fund biomedical research. However, if you read some of the Interviews with Researchers on this website, you will see that many researchers cite funding as their biggest challenge. Winning grants is a competitive process and most researchers will experience having a grant turned down – as well as a grant awarded – some time in their career.



In this section you will find LINKS to other sources of information about funding and to some of the major funders in the UK. There is also an overview of how funding works and some background on organisations involved.

Unfortunately the Academy of Medical Sciences is unable to provide funding for conference attendance, medical student electives or research funding (outside of the individual schemes that it runs). We are also unable to help with individual requests for advice on how to obtain funds from other organisations.
