Mentoring and Outreach Events:

The Academy runs a regional programme of Mentoring and Outreach Scheme workshops and events.

These events are designed for all clinical academic trainees including: MBPhD students, Academic Foundation Doctors, Academic Clinical Fellows, Clinical Training Fellows, Clinical Lecturers and Clinician Scientist Fellows.

Recent events have taken place in London, Sheffield, Bristol and Belfast.


2011 programme of events

22 September – Cardiff – Developing a career in academic medicine
29 September – Birmingham – Developing a career in academic medicine
*19 October – Belfast – Expanding your horizons: careers in academic medicine

*This event in Belfast is particularly targetted at medical students.

Further workshops will take place in the north of England and in Scotland in early 2012.



Event agendas include presentations and debates aimed at individuals interested in developing their career in academic medicine, from getting started in academic medicine, making the most of mentoring and being successful at interview, to gaining independence and developing a research team. Specific mentor development workshops are also offered to Academy Fellows, senior academic trainees and other senior academics interested in developing their mentoring skills.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) are committed to developing the capacity of researchers. They fund the Academy of Medical Sciences as an independent body to provide support through a Mentoring and Outreach programme for young clinical researchers.
