The Academy’s scheme offers Clinical Scientists the opportunity to be mentored by a senior colleague from the Academy Fellowship, for the term of their funded research project. The Academy’s programme also provides guidance and advice about mentoring, through workshops and other events, for all biomedical scientists, intent on pursuing an academic career.
Clinical Scientists in the scheme select their own mentor from the Academy's Fellowship, with the Fellow's agreement, of course. The Academy Fellows give their time on a voluntary basis and are not compensated for undertaking this role.
Mentors and mentees are encouraged to develop their relationship in the most appropriate way for the two individuals involved. On average a mentor and mentee meet a couple of times each year and will also talk by telephone or exchange emails, according to the changing needs and circumstances of the Clinical Scientist. The mentor and mentee are expected to negotiate the boundaries of the relationship and agree to maintain a level of confidentiality regarding the matters that they discuss and any ideas, research results or other information or opinions they exchange.
A number of resources are available here as DOWNLOADS, including an Application Form, for Clinician Scientists to apply for an Academy Mentor, and a sample Mentoring Contract, outlining the important issues to agree at the start of the relationship.
