Helping Mentoring Work

There are a few important things to consider, to help make the mentoring relationship work well. For example:

  • As a mentee, be clear with your mentor about what you want from the overall mentoring relationship
  • Have a clear mentoring contract or agreement, which defines the boundaries and expectations of the mentoring relationship
  • Be clear about what you need from each meeting, phone call or email
  • Take time to get to know each other, build rapport and trust
  • As a mentee be open to new ideas and to being challenged
  • Follow through on ideas discussed and actions agreed
  • Give each other feedback about what works

Some resources are available here as Downloads, to support and structure the mentoring relationship.

Why mentoring may not always work

From time to time mentoring relationships can become unproductive.

This can be for a variety of reasons

– Changes in the needs for mentoring

– Difficulties in establishing rapport

– Difficulties finding time to meet

If you are having difficulties, the mentoring programme co-ordinator is available to offer support and guidance and you can select a new mentor if necessary.
