The UK Clinical Reseach Collaboration (UKCRC) recently reviewed the health research scene in the UK and the Treasury commissioned a review of UK health research funding, the "Cooksey Report". Over half the money spent on health research funds cancer research and research into neurological science and mental health (see Charts 2.4 and 2.5 in the Cooksey Report).
These reports identify the strength of basic research in the UK and a need for more emphasis on Translational Research in medicine - to promote the application of new discoveries at the bench to application at the bedside. The Academy is keen to support Translational Medicine in all specialties.
