Specialties in Academic Medicine

A stethoscope

This section provides some introductions to research in a selection of specialties - it is not an exhaustive list of subjects - and there are links on the right to INTERVIEWS with doctors carrying out research in other specialties.

The UK Clinical Reseach Collaboration (UKCRC) recently reviewed the health research scene in the UK and the Treasury commissioned a review of UK health research funding, the "Cooksey Report". See DOWNLOADS on the right menu. Over half the money spent on health research funds cancer research and research into neurological science and mental health (see Charts 2.4 and 2.5 in the Cooksey Report).

These reports identify the strength of basic research in the UK and a need for more emphasis on Translational Research in medicine - to promote the application of new discoveries at the bench to application at the bedside. The Academy is keen to support Translational Medicine in all specialties.
