Neuroscience encompasses topics as diverse as analyzing molecules that cause ‘mad cow disease’ (BSE), recording the electrical signals that nerve cells produce as they receive sensory information or instruct muscles to contract, imaging the calcium concentration changes that trigger damage to the nervous system in stroke, developing stem cell transplantation to try to cure brain diseases, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to "see" through the skull and monitor the activation of different brain areas, and using psychological tests to assess normal cognitive function and how it goes wrong in psychiatric and neurological disorders.
